Iron Door Scratch Touch-Up Guide

Minor scratches are easy to repair and help protect your iron door from rust and the elements. Follow these steps for the best results.

Materials Needed

• Fine-grit sandpaper (320–400 grit)
• Mild soap and water
• Clean microfiber cloth
• Masking tape and paper or plastic sheeting
• Rust-inhibiting spray primer
• Matching spray paint
• Clear spray topcoat (recommended if your door has a clear protective finish)

Step 1: Clean the Area

Wash the damaged area with mild soap and water to remove dirt, dust, and oils. Allow the surface to dry completely before beginning the repair.

Step 2: Sand the Scratch

Lightly sand the scratched area until the edges are smooth. If any rust is present, sand until all rust has been removed. Wipe away all sanding dust with a clean cloth.

Step 3: Mask the Surrounding Area

Use masking tape and paper or plastic to protect the surrounding wall, glass, and weather seals from overspray.

Step 4: Apply Spray Primer

Shake the primer can thoroughly according to the manufacturer's instructions.

• Hold the can approximately 8–12 inches from the surface.
• Apply 2–3 light coats, using smooth, even passes.
• Allow 5–10 minutes between coats, or follow the dry time listed on the can.
• Let the final coat dry completely before painting.

Step 5: Apply Matching Spray Paint

Shake the paint can thoroughly before use.

• Hold the can 8–12 inches from the surface.
• Apply 2–4 light coats, overlapping each pass slightly.
• Avoid heavy coats, which can cause runs or uneven texture.
• Allow the recommended drying time between coats.

Step 6: Apply Clear Coat (Recommended)

If your door has a clear protective finish, apply 2–3 light coats of clear spray topcoat after the paint has dried according to the manufacturer's instructions. This helps protect the repair from UV exposure, moisture, and everyday wear while blending the sheen with the surrounding finish.

Step 7: Remove Masking

Carefully remove the masking tape and protective paper after the final coat becomes tack-free but before it fully hardens. This helps produce clean paint lines.

Allow the Finish to Cure

Allow the repaired area to cure completely before cleaning the door or exposing it to heavy moisture. Full cure times vary by product, so refer to the instructions on the spray cans.
